We're already suffering from PN-40 envy. October 15th is getting closer...

We don't normally rush out a buy the newest thing on the market but, in this case, we may make an exception. It sounds like DeLorme has done a good job beta testing the PN-40 with knowledgable geocachers, so maybe they won't have the same problems as recent Magellan and Garmin units. $400 will get you the GPSr and mapping software (sounds reasonable). For a $30 annual subscription, you get unlimited downloads of aerial images and 7.5-min topo quads. We've used a Magellan Explorist 210 with good success since we first started geocaching. Kinda hate to retire it, but it's time.

REI says they're supposed to get them quickly. I'd like to save the 10% (rebate). The SE looks nice, but I don't see where the extra internal memory justifies another $100 when you can buy SD cards for a lot less. Sure wish it was already here for the Challenge this weekend. The old Magellan 210 will just have to keep doing its thing.

DeLorme has once again delayed shipping the PN-40. Seems they've had some trouble with the accelerometer. The latest news is they will begin shipping to pre-sold customers the week of Nov 17. That's also the date Amazon.com lists for shipping. REI doesn't have a date yet. We'll see.

I've pretty much made up my mind on the PN-40. It doesn't do WherIgo, though. At the GGA meeting, mtn-man gave a demonstration of WherIgo using a Garmin Oregon. You have to have an Oregon or a Colorado to play the WherIgo cartridge. While interesting, it seemed to many of us in attendance that it was a glorified virtual cache more akin to waypointing. There's only two in Georgia and it doesn't look like it's catching on. I like new, flashy hi-tech stuff, but this didn't really grab me.

J&R Electronics just informed us that our PN-40 shipped today :D :D :D . We paid $340 with free shipping and no sales tax.

BTW, Amazon.com has just lowered their price to match, however REI still has it at list ($399).

Really want to see it when you get it. Was really interested when I saw the previews on it.

It's here!

Our PN-40 was delivered yesterday at 9:41am and I haven't put it down since. I popped in the batteries, turned it on and, in a matter of a minute and a half I had 26' accuracy ... sitting in my office well away from a window. After that first boot-up, it now acquires satellites in a matter of seconds. The learning curve is a bit steep due to all the features and customizations available. At least manual is well written and the DeLorme forum is quite helpful (my only other experience with GPSr customer service is with Magellan  )

Topo USA is included with the PN-40, along with a generous amount of free down-loadable maps and aerial imagery. I quickly filled the 1GB SD card (also included) and had to scurry to Circuit City for an 8GB card. I've still got a lot to learn, but I'm dying to get this thing out geocaching. So far, I'm liking it a lot.
