CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — George Morrison, a former Navy rear admiral and the father of Jim Morrison, the late frontman of The Doors, has died. He was 89.
Morrison died Nov. 17 after a fall in a Coronado hospital, said his daughter, Anne Chewning of Thousand Oaks.
Born in Rome, Ga., Morrison graduated from the Naval Academy and was once the youngest admiral in the nation's fleet. He was aboard the mine-layer Pruitt in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese bombing on Dec. 7, 1941.
He flew combat missions during the last year of World War II and again during the Korean War.
Morrison also oversaw naval operations during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, which led to an escalation of American involvement in Vietnam. He later commanded U.S. forces in the South Pacific from Guam in 1975, when he set up a tent city for more than 100,000 South Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon.
Morrison had three children with his wife, Clara, including Jim, who became a music icon in the 1960s.
